Sliding Door Wardrobes

As far back as the Roman Empire, sliding door wardrobes were used. Findings from the archaeological digs around Pompeii, Italy were discovered. With sliding door wardrobes, there are two different kinds, one is the doors are hung from the top and two they can have a bottom rolling system.

In the modern sliding door wardrobes, the most often system used is the ‘top hung’ system. There are two trolley hangers at the top of the wardrobe, running on a concealed track. Most of the weight of the door is with the hangers, thus the doors are easily moved back and forth.

Each end of the sliding door wardrobes is a track stopper to take the impact if the door is slammed. Kids are known to slam the sliding door wardrobes back and forth with a little force. The track stoppers will keep the doors on the hanger. Sliding door wardrobes that are top hung have a maximum weight limit per trolley.

Sliding door wardrobes that are top hung are hung at the top from two points. They have to have additional guides at the bottom to keep the door from swinging outwards. One of the most common one are the ‘clear threshold guiding’, it is fixed to the floor. The plastic guide is about sixty millimeters wide. A groove is cut on the bottom of the door which the door runs over the guide, preventing the door from swinging out.

At times when installing sliding door wardrobes, the top hung method cannot be used. The weight of the doors might be too heavy to be supported correctly. So a bottom rolling system is used. This type of system for the sliding door wardrobe has two rollers at the bottom of the door track, and two guides at the top of the running channel. Since the weight of the sliding door wardrobes is on the two bottom wheels, more force is used to move the door. The mechanisms of these sliding door wardrobes are safe. The rollers have two safety locks that prevent the doors from jumping the track.

There are so many different styles of sliding door wardrobes, the list is almost endless. From veneer, painted, metal, glass or plastic. Maybe one with mirrors is always nice. The choice is yours. Depending on where the wardrobe sliding doors are to be put will determine what kind you need to buy.

They can be found in kitchens, business offices, bedrooms, bathrooms, hotel rooms, etc. There are even websites that will cut and have sliding door wardrobes delivered to you. But if you go that route, be sure the measurements are correct. The old adage ‘measure twice cut once’ is very good to adhere too.

Many will not accept returns, so be very careful ordering online. When ordering sliding door wardrobes at a store, you will still have to take them the measurements, or some will send a quailified person out to measure for you. Of course the prices will vary, depending on the size of the doors and what you want them made out of.
